Asakusa 浅草 (shallow grass)

The tourist area. Used to be a pleasure &entertainment district of Tokyo (Yoshiwara, the popular prostitution district in Edo-era located at Senzoku, north of Asakusa). All buildings are restored after heavily damaged from natural disaster and WWII. Today, Asakusa is very popular for budget tourist and home for many guesthouses, ryokan, and hotels. Lots of foreign tourist get their first impression of Japan from Asakusa, therefore, the whole area is decorated with old-tokyo theme and coated with modern touristy establishment like Skytree, Sumida aquarium, etc.

My first Asakusa morning, just arrived from Haneda airport. We're passing Senso-ji and it's incredibly quiet place with no one around~ Saw some workers bow to the Kaminari-mon big lantern before went office.

Kaminari-mon

Large pot of smoke before stepping in to the temple. Japanese believe grabbing this smoke toward your body will spiritually cleanse & heal you. Some students were rubbing the smoke on their head, to give them extra intelligent?

Senso-ji temple front

Shin nakamise-dori shopping street

Between Kaminarimon gate and Senso-ji we could find a shoutengai (shopping street), named Nakamise-dori. There's also shop street if you turn left before Senso-ji called shin-nakamise-dori. This is a great place to find souvenirs!

We bought some ice at nakamise, the green tea kakigori (shaved ice) has snowy texture! loved it

Taiyaki & Ningyoyaki, freshly made with anko (red bean paste) filling

Nakamise is great place to buy street food.

Many rickshaw for tourist. We spotted one that hired for wedding too.. How much that cost? a fortune for sure :))

Senso-ji temple complex.

Asakusa Don Quijote. Big bold red sign.

ROCK ZA.. Pachinko parlor? At 3rd floor of this bld. is manga cafe

Skytree as seen from Sumida park

Then we went to Tokyo Skytree. Located in office building and shopping area Solamachi. Near the entrance you will find Tokyo Banana shop in many type and colors to choose. Tokyo Sktyree is a commercial observation deck (currently the highest building in Japan, 634m). We didn't go up Skytree, cost too much money for an observation deck hahaha. In case you're interested, ticket price is 2,060 JPY (first observatory, around half height of the tower), 3,090 JPY (first and second observatories), also prior reservation is needed with service charge of 500 JPY.

Odaiba お台場 (a place on pedestal)

An artificial island made solely for family and couple weekend-entertainment. Oh, and also office buildings.

You could see Tokyo from its bay. That's the Rainbow bridge, connecting Odaiba to Tokyo land.

Odaiba has a very laid-back, leisure athmosphere. As in the photo, they also have a water bus roaming from Odaiba to central Tokyo like Asakusa. Main attraction is not the beach for me, actually to find this island and the whole city on it is artificial is the most interesting point.

Evening stroll on Odaiba should involve this faux Liberty Statue.

After a visit on the first time, I know that Odaiba is shows its best at night!

Not to be missed, the 1:1 gundam statue in front of DiverCity mall, they have show at night, the big screen shows a movie while the gundam will do the same this as the movie shown at the real world before your eyes, well by lighting some lamp, and shooting smoke.. But it's still awesome, guys haha. Inside the DiverCity 7th floor, there's also Gundam Front which have some Gunpla (Gundam plastic model) exibition and selling limited goods.

If you visit Odaiba, there's also Oedo Onsen Monogatari (Edo-themed spa&sauna theme park), Palette Town, Tokyo Joypolis (indoor coaster, virtual reality & more), etc. Afterall, almost all eye-catching buildings are malls or entertainment venues.

Hey buddy!
