Here's quoted text from Tokyo Damage: "This is one of the best places to people-watch, because of the diversity of the crowd: Usually there are street musicians, ridiculous fashions, religious cultists, guys trying to pick up women, karaoke touts, a million shoppers, homeless, petty hustlers, hookers, businessmen, hayseeds, confused foreigners, glam rock people, nerds, convicted felons, students all going at once."
View from Shinjuku Tokyo Metro Government tower, it's totally free to go up.
Shinjuku station is the biggest, busiest, most crowded train station of all Japan. Also I find it's interesting, the first time I saw Japanese homeless and hobos, is in Shinjuku. Combined with cool street musician (you bought their demo CDs instead of throwing coins) also some nasty rude smokers. The smoking area is kind of dirty. I don't find it's normal to found a dirty blotch in Japan, I mean, it's sure a smoking area, but they throw the cigar's butt on the paving. But in Jakarta you find that everywhere :)) But guess that's what make Shinjuku feels like a place with human not machine. Love!
Studio ALTA, famous Shinjuku icon and featured on lots of Japanese manga/anime/series.
If you're after the street musician, try start from Shinjuku station
south exit, walk along Lumine, then facing bldng with big Odakyu sign. There will be

After passing JUMBO pachinko &
see the Kaleido dept. store, make U turn to the right (below train track
flyover) then keep walking you'll end up at the East exit with studio

spot for watching street musician.
If you want to continue, turn right
at Bic camera intersection, you'll see big Lumine EST sign. Keep walking
along the Lumine building, across you will see Topman/Topshop, keep straight along Lumine est, you will passing NOWA, and soon end up in

The Flags building (GAP logo on entrance) has 4 floors dedicated for Tower Records.
Shinjuku sta. south-east exit, at evening many musicians will play at this square. Flags is on the left, Green peas on center, Book-off on the right)
If you want to see the red light district Kabukicho, start from Studio ALTA. Go to the alley on your left hand facing ALTA you'll pass Mcdonald's, ABC Mart & Matsumoto Kiyoshi, keep walking straight until you see intersection with Don quijote in your front and red Kabukicho sign across the street. If you start from JUMBO pachinko, walk facing Kaleido dept. store intersection, turn right, walk below train track flyover, keep walking straight and red K-cho sign will be at your left across the street. If you never heard of Kabukicho before, Toko Damage could explain you what crazy wild place it is.

Divided to 4 parts, record shop part, office building part, you could find Tokyo Government Observation Deck (free) next to Keio building. The Las Vegas part, the Kabukicho district. Tower Records
Big music company in Japan (we also used to have HMV, but they closed down in Japan?) Everything on the rack is new, you could find old releases on discount. Most popular Tower Record sure is the one at Shibuya, here in Shinjuku Tower Records has whole 4 floors offers you vast collection of music, from Japan and International.
Found Dorlis - Swingin' Street CD (2010). (still on normal price, haha)
In Japanese music store, please check the whole array. A band started with "The" may not listed at the "T" rack, might be in "Z", since in Japanese language you write "The" as "Za", and sometimes it will be written in katakana, etc, just keep looking.
Dir en Grey, lol
If an artist/band walk into a music store, it's customary for them to take a picture and sign it to be plastered on the store's wall. If you go to Tower Records, don't miss their merchandise too, good for souvenirs. They got headphones starting from 900 JPY, pen, pencils, towel, etc..
CDs from Tower Record are all new and cost you more money than the one from second-handed shops above. If you really love the band, maybe it's best for you to buy the new one. Choose wisely & have fun record-shopping!
Bonus: Kyoto Record Shop in pdf
I didn't spent much time in Kyoto, but I found a guide book at a random record shop (forgot the name). I did a scan and you could download it at the link above. All text in Japanese only.
Remember, most indoor place especially stores in Japan prohibit you to take pictures, please watch for signs and don't get caught.
Busy intersection, scramble crossing, hachiko statue. Got more
'international' feeling to it. Western style like hip-hop spotted nearly
on every corner. Trendiest neighborhood of Tokyo.
Get the best view of the scramble from Starbucks at Tsutaya Q-FRONT building (that one on the left)
I started exploring Shibuya from Aoyama-itchome. There's a food flea festival in Gaienmae which is I'm glad because many tester food hha. Gaienmae is where the most of Japan modeling agencies set their office. This area have some quirky twist, they have some Shibuya-ish fancy themed cafe and public art sculptures..
To reach Shibuya, keep walking west along Aoyama-dori. I spotted Cafe du Monstre across the street! It's a horror themed restaurant, the hotel beside, Sakura Fleur Aoyama Hotel is also got vampire-ish theme.
After 15 mins walking.. arrived at Shibuya square! Very crowded!
Take a typical picture with Hachiko statue..
Today I'm going to a livehouse, Shibuya O-NEST, so rest of the day spent there. When the gigs over it's already laaaate nothing much left to see :( As you may know shops at Japan closes early at 8 or 9 pm..
Around Shibuya O-Nest, there's many other live houses like Club Asia, Vuenos, Womb, and the othe Shibuya-O groups, O-West, O-East & O-Crest. In fact, this area is called Love Hotel hill because theres many love hotels around! :))
Most of livehouses at Tokyo prohibit you to get inside with any kind of bags, because it might bother the others. Make sure you're put are your belonging in the coin lockers. Except the show ticket, phone & wallet. Many of them also require you to buy drink (around 500 JPY) and there will be artist's goods for sell too, so bring extra cash. If you go to this area, there's coin lockers beside O-Crest entrance. If around your live houses doesn't have any coin lockers, look for it at the nearest train station.
I'm taking free upcoming events' flyer!
toe, Tricot, Luminous Orange, YMCK flyer for their upcoming shows in September <3
Indonesian group, PeeWee Gaskins flyer for their show at Yoyogi
Some other flyers on the rack.. there might be CD demo as well, all free.
People lining up for the show to open gate at O-WEST, O-NEST is located just across.
Be careful with the lack of pavement. O-West are more popular and held bigger shows than NEST or Crest. I'm still waiting for the gate to open at the O-Nest!
O-Nest is a little bit hidden next to Lawson across O-WEST, go to the 4th floor directly using the elevator on the entrance. A sandwich board with show details for today placed inside the building.
Inside O-Nest elevator, live schedule, flyers, and all.
After getting inside, they checked my ticket and give a monthly live schedule magazine on all Shobuya-O livehouses. Also a drink coupon. The bar usually got beer, juices and softdrinks for you to choose. After 10 minutes waiting, the first band Lucky Tapes step to the stage & plays, they were okay, this is the first time I heard of this band.
Next, Organic Stereo (Hiroyuki Morikawa)! He's as humble as I ever imagine, he plays the guitar beautifully, then thanked us for being there, telling us to give a moment for some peaceful music while we're all in the middle of rushing Shibuya (cmiiw, he said this in Japanese). He played The Earth Without us, The Irreversible Circle, She Has a Rainbow and some new material from his newest album.
Letting Up Despite Great Faults are a 4 pieces band from Austin-LA. They're shogaze/dream pop like Asobi Seksu, or Radio dept. The show was very engaging, warm, and crazy at the same time! Funniest things are when they do the mc noone really understand their English! The guitarist even said "This is awkward" and nobody notices, yet everybody faces was like, :D :D :D :D :D. HAHA
End of the show~ everybody gathered in the bar (including the artist) Then take a picture with Morikawa-san of Organic Stereo & his support keyboardist :0 :0 I was telling him I came from Indonesia to see Organic Stereo live he gasped and thanked, haha. Many fans still there and hang up with Letting Up dudes.. And I'm heading home, it's getting very late :)
whoa wait, an award?
you must be kidding this blog is just 2 months old, lol
but no people, it's no joke and I feel kinda elated, haha
as the award winner, I have to do 2 things: firstly, thanked the person who awarded me. Here she is: Romy (go on give her a click :D)
and secondly, tell the world 8 things about myself. Yay thank god it's preety easy. Let's start.
1. I own a little online shop selling fancy contacts!
2. I have passion in surrealism. Tarsem Singh is my favorite director. As you known, Surreal means something dreamy-weird. It isn't scary or gory. It just too weird you will feel uncomfortable
The Namibia desert of beauty
3. I'm a cafe-latte & lemon tea addict. I hate spicy food. Love the sweet & tangy one.
4. I LOVE BICYCLING
5. My favorite animals are cats and horses
ahh, they look good together
6. I'm a SCRUFFY/STUBBLE BEARD fetish lolol
I'm dying right here
7. My dream house is filled with woods, trees, and pillows
8. I really enjoy watching animation movie, both 2D and 3D. Eastern or western. They always pimp my mood
hyahyah you wouldn't have guess it. Or have you.
Well you figured it all out now. Now gimme the award prize.
Unfortunately this is just for fun lol
Anyway!
Lately I have a new toy, it is Vocaloid. A singing synthesizer from Yamaha (converting text to digital singing voice). Since the program was made in Japan, as expected it was in Japanese and not able to sing in another language except Japanese and full of something-resembles-six-years-old-girl-cuteness or you can say, anime lol
I browsed for some English voice or maybe lower pitch voice but still cannot find the useful one, Im still trying to make something with this fun software, tho. Maybe will post about it later with my completed project.
There is some neat Vocaloid remix I found on Youtube:
Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams (sung by Sweet Ann from Vocaloid)
Lady Gaga - Poker face (sung by Luka from Vocaloid)
You just have to install vocaloid and music syth program to remix any song. Isn't that delicious!
Most notable music: Celine Dion - Un garcon pas comme les autres
It took me almost 9 years to figure out this song. I heard this song played for a metrotv program called Sagas. They are the first 24-hour news channel and my dad always watched it. Browsing at google is quite an alien thing to me at that time :)) During school days I never forget this beautiful melody, tried to search it when I'm at internet cafe whenever I remember, with any keyword (yeah anything) And end of last year (maybe, I don't quite remember) I found it with keyword 'sigi' that is all I remember from the song. I don't even know it was Celine Dion haha
I SECRETLY LOVE THESE SONGS AND NOW IT'S OFFICIALLY BEING PUBLIC SECRET
Ringo Shiina / Shena Ringo born on November 25, 1978. She works as a solo musician and singer and is a member of the band Tokyo Jihen.
"fear me!"
She was born with an illness in which the esophagus narrows as it approaches the stomach, resulting in many surgeries. (I supposed that's why she has that typical inhuman-high pitch? haha)
She plays wide range of music from pop, rock, jazz, and some undescribe-able music.
I know this is so very late, but
yes, we I love you ringo!
Thank you for creating musics that never failed to brighten my days
so lets make something with apple, since ringo in english really means apple! here is the apple pie
another fanpie for you, ringo. But you can not even touch it, muahaha
Listen to her pixie-voice singing along with her band Tokyo Jihen, remixing the classic Jazz song, The Lady is a Tramp.
I really cannot decide what video to put up here. Sorry if you didn't like it because it's my personal favorite.
Asobi seksu, the New york dream pop/shoegaze band has just held their live music in Smesco Convention Hall, Jl Gatot Subroto, Jakarta yesterday evening. (organized by trilogy)
I didn't attend their show, oh, and another sad thing is they only got 200-ish crowds :(
How I wish I have some AS fans as friend :(
The opening act was belong to Sajama Cut, and the party started at 10 pm
Yuki Chikudate (vocal, keyboard) and James Hanna (guitar, vocal) start the show with the song 'Straw'.
